Neck Pain:
Neck pain can be caused locally or can arise from other problems in the spinal joints, discs, ligaments and muscles.
Your neck muscles spread out from the neck to attach to the upper eight ribs, shoulder girdles, skull and jaw bone. You may also experience headaches arising from the neck, which is a direct referral from joints and muscles.
We therefore assess areas of tightness, weakness, inflexibility, poor posture or alignment of your neck, even poor breathing patterns associated with any of these areas.
Benefits of physiotherapy for treatment of neck pain:
- Pain reduction: Physiotherapists use various techniques like joint mobilisations, soft tissue release, stretches, massage, exercise and electrotherapy to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Improved mobility: As pain decreases and muscles strengthen, you’ll regain your range of motion and be able to move your neck more easily.
- Enhanced muscle function: Physiotherapy exercises help strengthen the muscles in your neck and shoulders, making them more resilient to future injuries, and improve your overall posture and alignment.
- Prevention of recurrence: By addressing the root cause of your neck pain and providing you with exercises and lifestyle advice, physiotherapy can significantly reduce the risk of future problems.

What we will do to treat your neck pain
- Through detailed discussion and examination, we will assess your neck pain, pinpointing its location, intensity and any radiating symptoms. We will review your medical history, look at your neck’s flexibility, strength and postural alignment.
- We look at possible underlying causes, such as carrying heavy bags on the shoulder causing muscles to tighten, muscle strain, whiplash, arthritis, nerve impingement or poor lower back, head and jaw alignment.
- This accurate diagnosis ensures the most effective treatment for you is chosen. Treatment may include:
- Manual therapy: Skilled hands-on techniques like joint mobilisations, manipulations, and soft tissue massage can ease pain, improve joint mobility, and release muscle tension in your neck and surrounding areas.
- Targeted exercise therapy: Personalized exercise programs designed to strengthen key neck muscles, improve flexibility and enhance mobility. This strengthens your support system, reducing pain and preventing future issues.
- Pain management: Various pain-relieving methods like acupuncture, heat therapy, or ultrasound to provide comfort and facilitate healing.
- Education and guidance: We will teach you how to correct your trunk, shoulder and neck posture and alignment to stop compensations and the resulting strain on the neck.
